Narcissism: When Self-Love Turns Into Self-Importance

In today’s world, confidence and self-love are encouraged — and rightly so. But there is a fine line between healthy self-worth and narcissism. Narcissism is not simply loving oneself; it is an excessive preoccupation with oneself while often overlooking the emotions, needs, and value of others.

A narcissistic person may constantly seek admiration, crave validation, struggle with criticism, and place their own desires above everything else. Behind the appearance of confidence, there can sometimes be a deep need for approval and control.

Healthy self-love says: “I value myself, and I value others too.”
Narcissism says: “My needs, my opinions, and my importance come first.”

Relationships thrive on empathy, mutual respect, and understanding. When these are replaced by constant attention-seeking and self-centeredness, emotional distance begins to grow.

Awareness is important—not to label people, but to understand behaviors, set healthy boundaries, and nurture relationships rooted in respect and emotional balance.

Choose confidence with humility, self-love with compassion, and strength with kindness.
